The African Cultural Center is celebrating Africa Day, a historic date that marks the founding of the Organization of African Unity (now the African Union) on May 25, 1963, with a series of cultural, sports, and institutional activities in São Paulo.

The celebrations began with a soccer match at the Parque Vila Lobos Stadium, bringing together African and Brazilian athletes in a moment of camaraderie that strengthens the bonds of friendship between peoples. The sporting event symbolized unity, respect, and intercultural dialogue—core values that Africa Day seeks to promote around the world.

The next major highlight will be the 20th Africa Brazil Awards Ceremony, scheduled for May 29 at 7:00 PM, at the Federal University of the State of São Paulo (UNIFESP). The award honors individuals, institutions, and leaders who have stood out in promoting African culture, human rights, and strengthening the relationship between Brazil and the African continent.

According to the organizers, this year’s celebration reaffirms the African Cultural Center’s commitment to valuing African identity and the African diaspora through concrete actions of exchange, recognition, and visibility.

“Celebrating Africa Day is more than remembering a historic date. It is about reinforcing our presence, our contribution, and our resilience in building a more just and inclusive world,” said the Center’s founder, Kabiesi Oba Adekunle Aderonmu.

Hundreds of guests, authorities, and representatives from the African and Afro-Brazilian communities are expected to participate in the celebrations.

Long live Africa Day! Long live the unity among peoples!
