She was the daughter of an ancient King of Emure, dedicating her life to serving the palace and attending to her father’s needs.
Every morning, Princess Adedewe would fetch water from what was then known as Omi Orisa to perform a crucial ritual: wetting the ground before the King, whose sacred feet (“Ese Ikasin”) were forbidden from touching dry earth.
Furthermore, this same water was traditionally fetched by virgins to prepare meals for the Kabiyesi during the annual New Yam Festival.
Princess Adedewe, in her profound commitment to these royal duties, remained unmarried and childless throughout her life.
Tragically, after her father’s passing, the princess, who had given so much to her community, became an object of scorn rather than reverence.
Heartbroken by this profound ingratitude, she returned to Omi Orisa and, in a moment of profound despair, entered the ground alive.
Before her disappearance, she made a powerful declaration: from that day forward, the water of the stream would not only serve the New Yam Festival but would become a source of healing and blessings for all.
She proclaimed that it would cleanse impurities, cure diseases, open wombs for the sterile, and grant positive responses to those who prayed with it.
According to Chief Elemo and Agbakin of Emure, these miraculous properties have been evident ever since Princess Adedewe’s decree.
This was further corroborated by Priest Fadare, the current custodian of Princess Adedewe Square. The consistent reports of healing and answered prayers have solidified the stream’s reputation as a potent and sacred site.
