When most people hear the word kauri, images of money and ancient rituals immediately come to mind. However, Kaurite is not just a form of currency or other traditional activity; they are much more.

Here are a few things no one would guess about the humble cowrie shell, from ancient Far Eastern etymology to African currency to Western pop culture!
1. Source cowrie

Kauri (also called kauri) were not made by the Romans, Africans, or Asians. The origin of Kaurito is the sea.
Cowrie is a sea slug shell. That’s why they are also called shell money.

2. Ghana chairs named after cowrie shells
At first glance, the words kauri and cedi seem unrelated, so it’s hard to believe.

However, the Akan (Ghanaian) term for cowrie shell is cedi. Hence the origin of the Ghanaians sit.

The word kauri appears to be an English word, but it is not. Kauri is a Hindi word which means sea slug.

Before Tinder or any dating site existed, when African women saw a guy they liked, they wore cowrie shells with a slit around their neck to show they were attracted to him.

Even today, some African women wear cowrie chains with a slit on the outside to show their readiness for a relationship.
5. Fertility

Everyone from Native Americans to coastal African tribes believed that the kaurito made women more fertile and beautiful. That is why women wear cowries in their hair, legs, arms and waist.

Some of that emotion has found its way into our society today, as celebrities of African descent now wear cowrie shells not only as a fashion statement, but also to identify with their roots.
