In the wake of a transformative year for Ekiti State, Governor Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji (BAO) emerged as a beacon of impactful governance, igniting lives and fostering connections with the people. The historic election of June 2021 marked the inception of a political journey defined by charisma, determination, and a unique campaign strategy that resonated with the diverse political forces in Ekiti.
BAO’s victory not only signaled a personal triumph but also a broader shift in Ekiti’s political landscape. The unprecedented handover from an incumbent Governor to a successor within the same political party, the All Progressive Congress (APC), underscored the endorsement of continuity and progress by the Ekiti electorate.
The culmination of this transformative journey occurred on the 16th of October, 2022, as BAO was sworn in as the Executive Governor of Ekiti State. The glamourous event was more than a ceremonial formality; it represented the dawn of a new era characterized by continuity, progress, and prosperity for all Ekiti people.
At the heart of BAO’s leadership lies a commitment to transparency, progressivism, and accountability. His governance model revolves around a well-defined social contract encapsulated in six strategic agenda items. To ensure that this contract remains a living document, BAO presented his report card to the Ekiti people every 100 days, reinforcing the principle that the citizens are his employers, and they deserve regular updates on his stewardship.
The first year of BAO’s administration witnessed the convergence of diverse political interests into a unified front for progress. Building upon the foundation laid by his predecessor, Dr. John Kayode Fayemi. BAO like his immediate predecessor, has continued to tackle the longstanding issue of project abandonment believing that every project built for the people of Ekiti State must justify its values.
The signing of the Ekiti State Transition Bill in 2019 by Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s administration was a pivotal step, and this has remained a guiding principle towards every step being taken by the BAO’s administration over the last year. The law aims to prevent the arbitrary discontinuation of projects by new administrations. BAO’s commitment to this law was evident as he not only completed projects left incomplete by his predecessor but also initiated new ones in crucial sectors such as road infrastructures, education, health, and agriculture.
One of the notable triumphs of BAO’s administration was the restoration of electricity to Ekiti East and Gbonyin Local Governments after fourteen years of darkness. This achievement went beyond illuminating homes; it symbolized a renaissance in economic and social life for these regions. Similarly, parts of Ekiti West, including Erinjiyan and Ikogosi Ekiti, experienced a return of light, transforming the landscape and bringing renewed hope to communities long deprived of this essential resource.
In the agricultural sector, BAO’s administration is sparking a revolution in the Ekiti and Nigerian economies. The strategic placement of competent individuals in key positions within the agriculture ministry underscores BAO’s commitment to putting the right people in the right roles. The envisioned results from the agriculture ministry hold the promise of not only economic growth but also food security and empowerment for the people of Ekiti.
Governor BAO’s success is not confined to political acumen; it extends to the qualities of humility and focused servant leadership. His approach has set a precedent for public servants, emphasizing the importance of genuine connections with the people. In doing so, BAO has demonstrated that true progress is not solely measured by grand gestures but also by a steadfast commitment to the well-being of citizens.
Despite facing resource constraints, BAO’s administration has consistently delivered impactful governance. Ongoing projects are nearing completion, and others are receiving accelerated attention, showcasing a remarkable commitment to service delivery. Ekiti State, under BAO’s leadership, stands as a testament to effective governance and transformative leadership.
As the journey from a historic election to a year of accomplishments unfolds, the resilience, development drive, dedication, and vision that define BAO’s tenure become increasingly tangible.
The promise of enduring prosperity and a legacy of impactful governance is not merely rhetoric but a lived reality for the people of Ekiti State.
