On this day in 1976(3rd February,1976) the then Nigerian Military Head of State, Gen Murtala Ramat Mohammed in a nationwide broadcast announced the creation of seven new states thus bringing the number of states in the Nigerian Federation to 19.
The seven new states created by executive fiat on 3rd February,1976 and their pioneer Military Governor’s were Bauchi, Lt Col Bello Kaliel: Gongola, Col Mohammodu Jega : Ondo, Major (Squadron Leader )Ita David Ikpeme: Ogun, Lt Col Seidu Balogun: Niger, Navy Commander Murtala Nyako: Imo, Navy Commander Ndubusi Kanu and Benue, Col Abdulahi Shelleng.
The creation of additional seven states which was in line with the recommendations of Justice Ayo Irikefe Panel was meant to reduce minority problems, accelerate development and provide for a stronger federal structure.
