Former Governor of Ekiti State and immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Kayode Fayemi, has paid glowing tribute to the late nationalist leader, Obafemi Awolowo, describing him as one of Nigeria’s most visionary statesmen whose ideas continue to shape the country’s development.

Fayemi made the remarks in a statement issued on Friday by his media office to commemorate Awolowo’s posthumous birthday, noting that the late sage’s life remains a powerful example of principled leadership and unwavering commitment to the welfare of the Nigerian people.

The former governor said Awolowo’s contributions to governance, particularly his pioneering social policies as Premier of the old Western Region, remain among the most enduring legacies in Nigeria’s political history.

According to him, the landmark introduction of free primary education under Awolowo’s administration transformed the social and economic landscape of the region and opened doors of opportunity for millions of Nigerians.

Fayemi noted that the policy helped lay the foundation for generations of professionals, scholars and leaders who have continued to contribute meaningfully to national development.

He said Awolowo’s leadership demonstrated the power of progressive ideas and people-focused policies in building a prosperous society.

“On this posthumous birthday anniversary, we celebrate the life and legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, a statesman whose ideas, courage and foresight helped shape modern Nigeria,” Fayemi said.

“He understood early that the true wealth of any society lies in the education and empowerment of its people. His introduction of free primary education was not merely a policy initiative; it was transformative and expanded opportunities for millions.”.

The former governor added that remembering Awolowo should inspire renewed commitment to the ideals of good governance, social justice and inclusive development.
