The government of Ekiti state has reiterated its stance against unauthorized tax collection.
The Secretary to Ekiti State Government, Dr. Habibat Adubiaro expressed the government’s stance against unauthorized tax collection, underlining a commitment to fairness and transparency in governance when she played host to the Market Traders Association of Nigeria(MATAN) Ekiti State Chapter in her office recently.
Mrs Adubiaro echoed the sentiments of the association’s president, urging them to clarify their role in serving the public and articulating the benefits they bring to the government’s table.
Acknowledging the association’s intentions, the SSG advocated for a proactive approach, suggesting a thorough public sensitization campaign before implementing any tax initiatives. She emphasized the importance of clarity and fairness, ensuring that those who had already fulfilled their tax obligations were not burdened again.
Earlier, The leader of the Ekiti branch of MATAN, Mr. Alofe Jacob Oludare emphasized their intention to collect taxes, aiming to bolster government revenue.
The association’s leader, elucidated their broader objectives, emphasizing public education on tax compliance and ensuring mutual benefits between taxpayers and the government. MATAN pledged to provide financial assistance to taxpayers in times of need, showcasing a compassionate approach to governance.
The association sought not only recognition but also support from the government, seeking assistance for their upcoming inauguration and aligning their objectives with the administration’s vision for equitable development.
Amidst differing perspectives and aspirations, a common ground emerged – a commitment to serving the masses, fostering cooperation between the government and grassroots associations, and navigating the complex terrain of taxation with diligence and empathy.
