The Opeyemi David Falegan Foundation (ODF foundation) has renewed its call for a more inclusive electoral system that guarantees the full participation of persons with disabilities (PWDs) across Nigeria in future elections.
The organisation made the appeal immediately after a courtesy visit to ODF media team by groups of People With Disability (PWDs) ahead of 2026 Ekiti State Governorship Election,they revealed recurring accessibility barriers and procedural lapses affecting PWD voters.
ODF Foundation said international monitory group will get involve in a robust monitoring of the forthcoming elections where observers who are trained to interpret languages will get involved.
The group called for the stationing of sign language interpreters in strategic polling units significantly to enhanced communication for deaf voters, several critical shortcomings were observed in previous elections.
“To strengthen disability inclusion, the organisation recommended regular updates to disability-disaggregated voter data, improved logistics for distributing assistive tools, and compulsory disability inclusion training for all election personnel” it added.
