Ekiti Assembly Passes Gender Bill Into Law

Ekiti State House of Assembly has passed three bills, with five others successfully passing through the first reading.

The bills passed at the House plenary in Ado Ekiti are a bill for a law to amend the State Administration of criminal justice (First Amendment) Bill 2022, Ekiti State Political Office (Gender Composition) Bill, 2022 and a bill for a law to repeal Ekiti State Contributory Pension Law No 1 of 2017 and re-enact Ekiti State Pension Reform law, 2022.

Leading the debate on the administration of criminal justice bill, the leader of Government business, Hon. Gboyega Aribisogan said the amendment would guarantee human rights of the people.

Members that included, Hon Raphael Ajibade, Moba 1 and Hon. Femi Akindele, lrepodun /lfelodun 1, expressed their support for the amendment, saying it aimed at conforming to lnternational best practices.

The Ekiti State Political Offices (Gender Composition) Bill 2022, which seeks to give women more political relevance and position was also passed by the lawmakers.

The members that included, Hon Yemisi Ayokunle, Hon Akin Oso and Tajudeen Akingbolu said the Bill when pass, would ensure minimum of 35 Percent for women in political position.

The lawmakers commended the State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi and his wife Erelu Bisi Fayemi for their commitment to gender promotion in Ekiti State and said the Bill was more appropriate now in line with global practices.

The committee on Labour Matters also presented it’s report on the Pension Reform Bill and the report was adopted by the House, leading to the repeal of the Ekiti State Contributory Pension Law No 1 of 2017 and the reenactment of Ekiti State Pension Reform Law, 2022.

At the plenary, the Chairman of the committee on Works and Transport, Rt Hon Hakeem Jamiu also presented his committe report in respect of its working visit to all ongoing roads and public projects in the state.

The committee recommended that the Ministry of works and Transportation should ensure that all contractors handling projects in Ekiti State should comply with local content policy of the State government, that laws should be enacted to checkmate roads vandals, and that contractors should adhere strictly to delivery date among others.

The report was adopted as a working documents of the House.

The bills that successfully passed through the first reading at the plenary are the Motor Vehicle and Motor Spare Parts Dealers Bill, sponsored by Hon Gboyega Aribisogan; Ekiti State Listed Sites (Preservation)Bill 2022 and Ekiti State Local Content Bill, 2022 both sponsored by Hon. Femi Akindele.

Others are Ekiti State Youth Development Trust Fund Bill, 2022 sponsored by Hon Joseph Olatunji and the Ekiti State Regulation Approval Bill 2022, sponsored by Hon Adeoye Aribasoye.
