Ekiti Assembly Condemns Gruesome Killing of Ekiti Indigen, Damilola By Police

The Ekiti State House of Assembly has condemned the tragic killing of an Ekiti indigen, a serving Corps member in Oyo State and shooting of the deceased brother by a Police Officer at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso.

Master Iyanda Damilola met his untimely death while attending the Graduation ceremony of his brother, he fell victim to a senseless act of violence caused by unscrupulous police officer who exhibited a high level of mediocre and unprofessionalism.

The issue of unethical conduct of the Police officer who killed Iyanda Damilola, an indigen of Ogotun Ekiti in Ekiti South West Local Government was raised by the Lawmaker representing Ekiti South West Constituency 2 in and the Majority Leader of the Ekiti State House of Assembly Hon.Tolulope Ige under the matter urgent public importance.

Raising the matter at the Plenary Hon Tolu Ige described the death of Iyanda Damilola as rude, painful and shocking, the Majority Leader of the House said it was a great loss to the family of the deceased and Ogotun Community. He solicited for the probe of the killing and called on Inspector General of police to fish out the killer.

Contributing to the issue, Hon Tope Longe, Oke Babatunde, Tunde Idowu, Idowu Odebunmi and Abimbola Solanke described the act as barbaric. the Lawmakers condemned the unprofessional attitude of the said police officer who killed Iyanda Damilola.

The Speaker of the House Rt Hon Adeoye Aribasoye in his remarks also condemned the killing in entirety, the Speaker said it is unreasonable for any sane person to kill his fellow human being, he called on the Inspector General of police to allow government to conduct psycratic test on the men of Nigeria Police to in order to be able to fish out the mentally derailed officers among them.

The House resolved to write a strong letter to the Inspector General of Police and National Security Adviser to President urging them to bring the culprit into book, the House also demanded for compensation for the family of Iyanda Damilola, befitting burial for the deceased, to take care of the health of his brother and as well to send its condolences to the family.

You will recall that in the early our of the day, the Federation of Ekiti State Student Union, (FESSU) staged a peaceful protest to the House of Assembly demanding for the prosecution of the killer of Iyanda Damilola, a serving Corps member in Oyo State.

At the Plenary, the House also passed the Ekiti State Regency law 2024, while Ekiti State House of Assembly Service Commission (amendment) bill 2024, Board of internal Revenue Amendment law 2024, Ekiti State Security trust fund law 2024 and Ekiti State Procurement re-enactment law 2024 were committed to the relevant committees of the House.

In another development, the House also confirmed the appointment of Barrister Opeyemi Ajibola as substantive Deputy Clerk, Legal Matters who have been functioning in acting capacity for over four months.

Motion seeking to ensure social responsible and Community engagement from Contractors operating within the State were moved by the Lawmaker representing Ado Constituency 1 Hon. Ayodeji Adegbite and it was extensively debated before the adoption.

Meanwhile, the House has extended the tenure of the Clerk of the House Mr Tola Esan by Seven days, the tenure which supposed to end by 22nd May, 2024 has been extended to 30th May, 2024, while the New Clerk of the House would take up the Legislative duties by June 1st, 2024.

Finally, the Speaker also announced the commencement of recess to enable the Contractor who want to do the re modeling of the House to do their work, and the House adjourned till 27th May, 2024.
