Visiting the Ekiti Agro-Allied International Airport today was a revelation of the transformative vision unfolding in Ekiti State. As someone who has traversed airports across the southwest, I can confidently assert that only a few of the six states’ airports can rival the facilities at the Ekiti Cargo Airport.
From the moment you approach the airport’s main entrance, you are greeted with a remarkable aesthetic appeal that sets the tone for what lies ahead. The seamless design flows into the terminal, where the check-in counters and baggage screening systems are as functional as they are modern. The VIP lounge is a blend of luxury and comfort, catering to the needs of distinguished travelers.
The runway, measuring an impressive 3.5 kilometers, is an engineering masterpiece and one of the longest in Nigeria today. This length positions the airport to accommodate a wide variety of aircraft, from smaller private planes to larger cargo and commercial jets, making it highly versatile and operationally ready for diverse aviation needs. Its durable construction and state-of-the-art finishing meet global aviation standards, ensuring safety and efficiency in takeoffs and landings. This critical infrastructure not only explains the airport’s readiness to support both private and commercial flight operations but also sets a benchmark for excellence in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
A key feature of the airport is the Control Tower, a modern facility that provides air traffic controllers with a vantage point for managing flight operations effectively and safely. The Control Tower is equipped with advanced communication and navigation systems, enabling seamless coordination between pilots and ground operators. This infrastructure guarantees that the airport meets the highest safety standards, supports increased air traffic, and aligns with global aviation best practices.
Another essential facility at the airport is the Meteorological Office, which plays a pivotal role in aviation safety and efficiency. This office is responsible for providing accurate weather forecasts, real-time updates, and climate data critical for flight planning and operations. Pilots rely on the information from this office to determine safe flight paths, manage turbulence risks, and ensure smooth landings and takeoffs. The presence of a meteorological office at the airport shows Ekiti’s commitment to prioritizing safety and operational excellence, as weather conditions are one of the most critical factors in aviation.
Equally impressive is the Fire Service Station, a vital facility ensuring the highest standards of safety and emergency response readiness. This station reflects Ekiti State’s dedication to not only meeting but exceeding aviation safety requirements, further enhancing the airport’s credibility.
The airport is also poised to bring substantial economic benefits to the state, particularly in the area of job creation. Following the non-scheduled flight permission granted by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) last year, the airport has already seen the deployment of key personnel, including employees of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). These direct employment opportunities are just the beginning, as more jobs will be created as the airport expands its operations to include commercial flights and other services. Beyond direct employment, the airport will generate significant indirect job opportunities, with an estimated (in my opinion) 1,000 people set to benefit through associated businesses such as logistics, transportation, hospitality, and retail. By creating both direct and indirect employment, the airport not only provides a means of livelihood for countless individuals but also stimulates wealth creation and prosperity for Ekiti people, making it a cornerstone of the state’s economic growth agenda.
The Ekiti Agro-Allied International Airport is also a remarkable success story of continuity in governance. The project was initiated under the visionary leadership of former Governor Kayode Fayemi, whose administration laid the foundation and made significant progress toward realizing the airport. This vision was carried forward and completed by the incumbent Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, who has shown a strong commitment to sustaining and completing impactful projects. This seamless transition between administrations highlights the strength of continuity in governance—one of the core principles Governor Oyebanji campaigned on—and emphasizes its critical role in achieving sustainable development for Ekiti State.
The airport is not just infrastructural development; it is the creation of a gateway that connects Ekiti to the world, promoting economic growth, job creation, and enhanced trade opportunities. It stands as a beacon of pride for Ekiti State and the southwest region, and I have no doubt it will serve as a catalyst for unprecedented growth in the years to come. We should be proud.
