The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, has called on members of Ekiti State House of Assembly to prioritize effective legislation during a two-day retreat held at the Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort, Ikogosi-Ekiti, on Saturday. The retreat, themed “Legislating and Oversight in Challenging Times,” aimed to enhance lawmakers’ roles in addressing the state’s pressing issues.
In his address, delivered by the Secretary to State Government, Dr. Habibat Adubiaro, the Governor highlighted that the retreat provides an invaluable opportunity for lawmakers to reflect on their responsibilities, renew their commitments, and improve their strategies to tackle the multifaceted challenges facing Ekiti State. He emphasized that their duties go beyond simply making laws; they must ensure those laws promote progress, equity, and sustainability.
Governor Oyebanji acknowledged that Ekiti, like many other states, is grappling with various challenges, including economic constraints, infrastructural deficits, social inequalities, and security concerns. He stressed the need for a nuanced understanding and a collaborative approach to address these issues effectively.
“Today’s retreat offers us a critical moment to reflect on our roles, renew our commitments, and enhance our strategies to address the complex challenges facing Ekiti State,” he said. “I recognize the immense responsibilities on our shoulders—not just in passing laws, but in ensuring those laws foster progress, equity, and sustainability.”
He further noted that, in these challenging times, the effectiveness of the legislative process is crucial. “Effective legislation is not just about passing bills; it’s about crafting laws that respond to current needs and are adaptable to future circumstances.”
Governor Oyebanji urged the legislative body to focus on inclusive legislation that addresses the needs of all segments of society, particularly the most vulnerable. He also advocated for evidence-based policymaking, emphasizing the importance of using research and data to inform decisions and enhance the impact of policies.
Earlier in the retreat, the Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye, acknowledged the challenges lawmakers face in carrying out their legislative and oversight functions. He commended members of the 7th Assembly for their commitment to the development and progress of the state.
