By Adeyinka Olaiya /Brazil

The habit of carrying EBO, sacrifices to the gods, is not just a practice, but a tradition in the Latin American country. Brazil is one of the countries in the world where  Ebos are carried in broad daylights.

The sacrifices to the gods of the Yorubas are realized daily . Ebos are prepared and are carried at wills in the streets of Brazil.

Ebo, in the Yoruba traditional religion , and according to its version in Brazil, is a dish served to the gods of the Yorubas, a plate of sacrifice to the gods.

The Yoruba gods are never neglected nor abandoned in Brazil, they are alive in all instances , they are appeased at wills, Orisas are worshiped, Ebos are carried. The gods are factual , they are real.

Esu, the messenger god  takes Ebo as advance payment, it represents a  stint of expected favor.

In the Yoruba traditional religion , Esu is a functional messenger of Olodumare, he mediates in spirit , he takes the offerings.

The performance of liturgy and rituals through ebós actually corrects the relationship between divinity and man, bringing the desired balance.

It is a fact that all conflicts in the Yorùbá cosmos can be resolved through the use of ebó. Sacrifice is the branch that brings solution and tranquility to the universe and organizes everyday problems.

In the exact sense of the Yoruba traditional religion , Four important rules must be observed in order to attain effective and positive results in the offerings of Ebos.

Ebo in the Streets of Brazil.

The first step is the correct use of each ritual element that is specified for the odù that was revealed in consultation with the oracle. Second , it must have real and sincere purpose and purposes.

Third, it has to be spiritually treated by Babalawo (Ifa priests) Fourth, there is a need for an integration between the Ifa-priest, the consultant and the spiritual forces that will be moved to obtain the desired result. Furthermore, when this relationship is close, herbs, if needed, will actually heal.

Ebo in the major streets of Brazil.

Sometimes the ebó will not come in the form of a physical offering, but rather through rules of behaviors and prohibitions. For example, not going to some places, not eating a certain type of food, not doing a certain type of task or behavior, adopting a prayer routine, etc.

A very important part of an ebó is determining the amount of time that it will be exposed and the place where it will be placed later.

In Ifa tradition, some of the Odus may allow you to put your ebó in a dumpster, but usually somewhere in nature might be the best choice. This definition is part of the oracle process.

But regarding its meaning, the most important thing is to understand that the ebó is more than a set of physical items.

Ebo is part of a system of forces and energy that is moved at the moment when consultation with the oracle begins.

Ebo

When Olódùmarè will use Orunmilá and his ministers, the Orishas and Ancestors, to be able to change or correct a certain situation, Esu, the messenger god is the energy-carrying element, or Ase (Amen).

Thus, the entire spiritual ensemble that makes up the foundations of religion moves through a simple consultation with Ifá.

It is a fact that one cannot understand the meaning of an ebó if one is ignorant of the metaphysical system that is involved and its various gears.

It is a fact that carrying  Ebo has become a tradition in Brazil, it is already a daily practice in the Latin American country.

In fact, Brazilians that are not even initiated in the yoruba traditional religion are mostly having books  containing lessons on how to prepare  Ebos, many have written books, informal classes on how to organize offerings to the gods of the Yorubas

Brazilians in this practice are  having lists of the requirements and the right ingredients to prepare the dish of Ebos to Esu, the messenger god mediates in favor of Elebos

A lot of Brazilians are self trained Elebos, they carry Ebos at wills, they join ideas when it is to attract situations that favors them , they know the Ebos to carry when it is to bring back their loved ones, attract fortunes, cure deceases , get promotions , win elections and several other opportunities.

Ebo

Irrespective of ones religious beliefs , the average Brazilian believes that the relationship between human beings and deities is expressed and obtained through the execution of rituals and liturgies.

However, the Babalawos ( Ifa priests ) in Brazil  says there is no sense in establishing the need to make an ebó without the oracle being involved.

Preparing and Carrying Ebo is same as dealing with a process of transmission, balance and replacement of a situation through Orisha, and with the interference of a qualified Babalawos (Ifa priest) who stipulates the composition, location, etc

The process of Ebos has  to be defined through the oracle, the Rituals and liturgies connects the physical world to the spiritual world in order to bring harmony and balance in situations .

In Brazil’s candomblé, the version of the Yoruba traditional religion, carrying Ebo is significant , it is always in relation to the determinations of (Babalawo) Ifa priests , who after consulting the divination source stipulates the right ebo.

it is the spiritual source to attaining unmerited grace. The determinations of a plate of ebo requires a profound knowledge in the practice of the Yoruba religion .

However, in Brazil, carrying Ebos  without consulting Babalawos (Ifa Priest) has become a common habit, Brazilians who already have the knowledge of the African traditional religion orders for plates of ebos to solve situations at wills

Ebo is the dish to the Orishas, but the offering and the preparation to the gods requires a Babalawo (Ifa Priests) who orates  the necessities to the gods, the Ifa priest conducts the  references to the Orishas before the Ebos are carried

Carrying Ebo is significant in Brazil , it is the easiest way to get favors from Orishas . Brazilians are Elebos in all ramifications, they carry it at wills .

Ebo, in the real sense demands the determinations of (Babalawos) Ifa priests , who consults the Oracle and stipulates the right Ebo

However, this is not always the case  in Brazil, some Brazilians  are self acclaimed Elebos, they carry Ebos without consulting the Babalawos ( Ifa priests ), they go by the receipts they find in their books. The offerings of Ebos represents a spiritual source to attaining unmerited grace.

The determinations of a plate of ebo requires a profound knowledge in the practice of the Yoruba traditional religion . Babalawos ( IFA priests) are dignified of stipulating the correct offerings after consulting the divination source.

However, in Brazil, carrying Ebos  without consulting Babalawos (Ifa Priest) has become a common habit , Brazilians having just the knowledge of the Yoruba traditional religion exercises his beliefs according to himself, he orders for plates of ebos to solve situations at wills, some never expects the determinations of Babalawos ( ifa priest) before offerings are realized at wills

Ebo is a  dish to the Orishas, but the offering and the preparation to the gods requires a Babalawo (Ifa Priests ) who orates  the necessities to the gods, Babalawo (Ifa priest ) conducts the rituals accordingly.

The Brazilian people run to the services of Babalawos when situation gets out of control , they look for the right Ebos to solve situations, they appease the gods in all instances.

Marchantes in Brazil created Disque Ebo , which means (calls for Ebos ), it is a system of home delivery of prepared Ebos bought from marchantes.

In this sense , you make your telephone call, tell your problems and you will receive the adequate ebos at your doorstep. This is to facilitate the realization of Ebos in Brazil . It is a fast direct telephone line designed to make quick orders for Ebos from  marchantes of traditional articles.

Brazilians who intend to solve certain problems without patience or wanting to pass through consultations from Babalawo (Ifa priest ) makes use of this system of telephone calls for home  deliveries of Ebos. The attitude of requesting Ebo through telephone is widely condemned by the Association of all Yoruba traditionalists in Brazil.

However, some are still adamant , they use the home delivery method, they do it against the recommendations of the competent Traditionalists

In Ifa tradition, it is said that the composition of the work of Ebo varies according to the determinations of the Orishas through Babalawos ( Ifa priests) It is not possible for the merchant to know what is the Ebo all about and how to use it positively, only Babalawos ( Ifa priest ) can consult and stipulate it rightly.

If Ebo is done wrongly, and without the presence of a Babalawo , the result could be negative and bounce back on the person who did it.In the Yoruba traditional religion , Ebos  made without consulting the Orishas will have no effect.

The most interesting part of the practice iis the manner at which the Brazilian people proudly exhibit the offerings of Ebo to the gods in the public, the Orishas are appeased in the bread daylight. One can easily deduce that an average Brazilian is Elebo, they give offerings to the gods with pride.

In Brazil, millions of Brazilians visits and performs rituals of Ebos , offerings to the goddess of the sea every Christmas and New year eves, the beaches are mostly decorated with Ebos from Brazilians who begs Yemonja for a prosperous new year .

This atitude is also encouraged by the government of Brazil who mostly prepare the beach areas for Brazilian traditionalists and tourists to realize their interests.

  1. Ebo means sacrifice. And it is marked not only by a Babalawo but also by Olóòrìșàs.
Offering, a “dish” of food without it being properly marked. Is not Ebo, but simply an offering. Which is perfectly fine. One can offer an Òrìșà something and ask that Òrìșà to help you. And a lot of the times that happens.
However when one wants to solve a specific problem you are dealing with In your life, one needs to consult Ifá or Òrìșà first with our respective divination systems. Why? Because Ebo is not going to solve it. Making Ebo might change things energetically in your life to help you solve it. There is always a human effort involved. Hence the divination practice for orientation to solve the problem. We make choices, and regardless of the good or bad outcome, we will have to deal with the consequence of our choices. Òrìșàs are not genies in a bottle, and Ebo is not a magic wand. Òrìșà tradition is not a commodity like “ok I give you this, and you make my problems go away”.
Not at all, it’s a spiritual system to support you and guide you in finding your path, and helps you to transform into a better person, and live with integrity and purpose. The work that has to be done to correct the condition you have created for yourself by making the wrong choices in your life, will have to done by you as well. There is no exception

    1. Thank you very much for your observation. The article itself tackled the common attitude in the Brazilian environment where sacrifices/ oferendas in Portuguese language are offered to the gods at wills , and without any prior consultation thru Ifa or Orisa divinatory system. Average Brazilian who practices or believes in the African traditional religion takes to shops and collects the items available and to the right place with sacrificial items to offer to the gods for one favor or the other . This attitude however has been condemned by the council of traditionalists In Brazil, yet Brazilians do it

Ebo, in the other hand requires the Ifa priest or Olorisa not just for checking thru the divinatory system but also to guide the person in question towards the preparation and the realization of the dish to the gods

Brazilians today finds quick solutions to getting the both realized faster , many takes it upon themselves and do it without any guidance from the priest . All these attitudes are also condemned here in Brazil

The article actually tackled attitudes of such . The both are alike but are different.

Thank you very much for your comment. Heritagenews appreciates.
