Omije Ojumi: A Case Study on Judgment and Family Matters

By Bayo Famoroti

When it comes to issues involving separated parents, we must be very slow to judge—especially when one of them is no longer alive to speak.

In the case of the late Omije Ojumi, many are quick to apportion blame without understanding what truly happened between her and her husband.

My question remains: *was the husband waiting for her to die before coming for his children?

It is troubling that on the very day she was buried, the husband’s family appeared, seeking to take custody of the children they had shown little concern for while she was alive. This sudden interest raises moral and emotional questions about responsibility and sincerity.

No matter how much a single parent hides a child from the other parent, time often reveals the truth. Eventually, children grow up and find their own answers.

That is why we must be careful when condemning one side in a separation. There are always two sides to every story.

Some men are truly responsible and loving fathers but become victims of circumstances. In some cases, misunderstandings lead women to take drastic steps—moving the children away, changing schools, or even denying the father’s identity—all in the heat of emotion.

Sadly, Omije Ojumi is no longer here to tell her story. May God protect the children she left behind and comfort her family.

Let this be a reminder to us all: when relationships break down, we must speak with compassion, seek truth with patience, and resist the temptation to judge without hearing both sides.
