São Paulo Court of Justice Enthrones the Oxê of Xangô in Historic Ceremony
São Paulo, October 9, 2025 — In an unprecedented milestone in the history of São Paulo State, the Court of Justice held a ceremony of enthronement of the Oxê of Xangô, the sacred double-headed axe that symbolizes justice and balance for the Afro-Brazilian religious communities.
The event, held at the Court’s headquarters, brought together judicial authorities, representatives of Afro-Brazilian religions, cultural and religious leaders, as well as special guests. The solemn act aimed to recognize the spiritual, symbolic, and cultural value of African traditions that have shaped Brazil’s identity.
The Oxê of Xangô, now permanently displayed at the Court’s headquarters, represents divine justice, truth, and the power of fair judgment. For practitioners of Candomblé and the Yoruba tradition, Xangô (or Sango) is the orixá who governs balance, ethics, and righteous judgment — values that deeply align with the principles of justice.
During the ceremony, several emotional speeches emphasized the importance of honoring African ancestry and recognizing Afro-Brazilian religions as a legitimate and essential part of national culture.
“The presence of the Oxê of Xangô within the Court symbolizes not only faith but also a commitment to social justice, the fight against religious intolerance, and the appreciation of Brazil’s spiritual diversity,” said one of the attending religious leaders.
The enthronement of the sacred axe within the judiciary’s space is seen as a historic gesture of recognition and reparation, reaffirming that African spirituality is also a source of wisdom and ethics.
With this initiative, the São Paulo Court of Justice takes an important step toward a more inclusive and representative justice, one that acknowledges the legacy of African and Afro-descendant peoples as a fundamental part of the nation’s formation.
