In Ekiti State,
the name Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji(BAO) is becoming synonymous with a new era of leadership, one marked by a deep commitment to inclusivity and the empowerment of People with Abilities in Disabilities (PWADs).
Governor Oyebanji, with his disability-friendly initiatives, has made significant strides towards ensuring that no one is left behind, particularly in special education, vocational skills, and access to essential services for persons with abilities in disabilities.
His administration’s achievements reflect a clear vision of social inclusion, underlined by a series of bold initiatives that have directly impacted the lives of students, children, and adults living with abilities in disabilities in the state.
Renovation of Special Schools and Infrastructure Improvements
One of Governor Oyebanji’s standout accomplishments has been the comprehensive renovation of facilities at the three Government Special Schools in Ekiti State, catering for boys, girls, and children with intellectual disabilities.
These schools, which previously struggled with inadequate infrastructure, have undergone significant upgrades. The boys’ and girls’ hostels and dining halls in these schools have been fully renovated, providing students with a more conducive environment to live and learn.
To further enhance comfort and safety, the administration installed solar bulbs and security lights in both boys’ and girls’ hostels. These solar-powered solutions are not only sustainable but also ensure round-the-clock safety for the students.
Additionally, iron double-bunk beds, mattresses, bed sheets, and pillowcases were provided to ensure the students’ comfort. The provision of mosquito nets for the schools also serves as a preventive measure against malaria, reflecting a comprehensive approach to the well-being of students with disabilities.
Commitment to Quality Education and ICT Development
Oyebanji’s administration has demonstrated a keen awareness of the importance of technology in education, especially for PWADs.
Through the AGILE project, a wide range of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) gadgets have been provided for the special schools.
These include 45 desktop computers, 63 laptops, and essential office equipment like printers, photocopiers, and scanners and other useful ICT tools.
Perhaps the most notable provision is the Braille embosser for the School for the Blind, which opens up a world of possibilities for visually impaired students, enabling them to access learning materials in Braille format.
Vocational and Skill Acquisition Initiatives
Vocational training is a cornerstone of Governor Oyebanji’s disability-friendly initiatives. Recognizing the need to empower PWADs with skills that can lead to financial independence, vocational and skill acquisition equipment was provided to the Government Special Schools.
These include tailoring, hairdressing, food and nutrition, and barbing equipment, all designed to help students develop hands-on skills. Such training equips PWADs to participate fully in society and contributes to reducing the stigma often associated with disabilities.
Additionally, the governor’s administration has empowered 30 trainees at the 2023 Skill Acquisition Centre for PWADs, showing a commitment to providing opportunities beyond the classroom.
The ongoing construction of a Social Inclusion Home for residents of the State Rehabilitation Centre further underscores the administration’s dedication to holistic care for PWADs.
Healthcare and Assistive Devices
Health is a key focus of Oyebanji’s administration, particularly concerning the needs of PWADs. His administration has introduced a free health scheme for people with disabilities in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
This initiative ensures that PWADs can access essential healthcare services without financial barriers. The provision of assistive devices such as wheelchairs and white canes to disabled individuals across the state’s three senatorial districts further highlights the administration’s attention to their mobility and independence.
Infrastructure for the Deaf and Physically Challenged
In a state-first initiative, Governor Oyebanji’s administration has embarked on the construction of a perimeter fence for the School for the Deaf and a new school gate for the Government School for the Physically Challenged and Intellectual Disability in Ido-Ekiti.
These infrastructural upgrades enhance the security and functionality of the schools, ensuring that students with hearing and physical impairments can learn in safe and well-maintained environments. Moreover, the installation of solar boreholes in the School for the Deaf ensures access to clean water, which is critical for the health and hygiene of the students.
The provision of a modern kitchen facility for the special schools also highlights the administration’s commitment to improving the quality of life for students, ensuring they receive nutritious meals in a safe environment.
The provision of operational vehicles to the three special schools and the Office of Disability Affairs means that these institutions will receive vehicles to support their daily activities. This also includes transporting students, staff, or materials, enhancing accessibility, and improving the overall efficiency of their operations.
Employment and Inclusion in State Programmes
Oyebanji’s disability-friendly policies extend beyond education and healthcare, reaching into employment and social inclusion.
His administration has employed the first speech therapists, occupational therapists, and physiotherapists in public special schools in Nigeria, marking a milestone in special education services. Furthermore, the recruitment of vocational teachers in areas such as ICT, physical education, art, and music across the three special schools signifies a commitment to providing a well-rounded education.
In another notable achievement, the state established its first JAMB Examination Centre specifically for People with Abilities in Disabilities, making education more accessible to students with special needs.
The governor has also ensured that PWADs are included in various state programs, such as the Kidscon event and the Adire Hub training, demonstrating that PWADs are an integral part of Ekiti State’s development.
Social and Civil Service Support
Beyond education and infrastructure, Governor Oyebanji’s administration has supported civil and public servants by providing sign language training.
This initiative ensures that government services are accessible to the hearing impaired, fostering a more inclusive public sector. Furthermore, for the first time, examination accommodations were provided for PWADs during the Civil Service Exam for teachers, marking a significant step in equalizing opportunities for people with disabilities.
Continuous Training for Leaders Championing Inclusion
The recently concluded training programme titled “Professional Ethics and Proficiency for Leaders in Disability Care” was a milestone in Governor Oyebanji’s continuous efforts to enhance the capabilities of those at the forefront of disability inclusion.
Held by Ekiti State Government Special Education and Social Inclusion under the leadership of Princess Adetoun Agboola, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Special Education and Social Inclusion, this programme brought together leaders from special education institutions, NGOs, rehabilitation centers, and other stakeholders involved in disability care across Ekiti State.
The training was structured to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical tools for leading in a sector that demands compassion, competence, and a deep understanding of ethical principles

Governor Oyebanji’s leadership in Ekiti State is a shining example of what it means to be a disability-friendly governor. His administration’s focus on improving infrastructure, empowering PWADs through education and vocational training, ensuring access to healthcare, and fostering social inclusion reflects a comprehensive and sustainable approach to disability rights.
