The Inspector General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, psc(+), NPM, NEAPS, fdc, CFR, on Thursday, presented an insurance cheque worth 13 billion naira to the families of Officers who paid the supreme price and those injured or disabled in the course of discharging their duties between 2012 to 2020.
Although over 6000 families are beneficiaries, the IGP presented cheques to 13 beneficiaries, while the Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police (AIGs) would present cheques to beneficiaries in their areas of jurisdiction.
The IGP, in his address, noted that the group life and accident insurance scheme are welfare packages funded by the Federal Government. However, the paucity of funds to implement the scheme created a backlog of unclaimed insurance claims from 2012- 2020.
Troubled by this development, the IGP made a presentation to President Muhammadu Buhari requesting the release of funds to pay the beneficiaries. The President then approved thirteen billion, six hundred and twenty-eight million, five hundred and thirty-five thousand, and five hundred and eighty naira (13, 628,535, 580) to pay the backlog of a total of 6,184 personnel.
“Knowing that nothing would bring back your beloved ones, I urge you all to judiciously utilize these funds in training your children and be rest assured that the Force under my leadership will continue to do more in advancing your welfare interest and that of service personnel,” he said.
While praying for the souls of the departed, the IGP further urged serving Officers to rededicate themselves to the nation because, unlike in the past, resources are being committed to Police reform and welfare.
